The Makalu base camp trek begins and ends in Tumlingtar. If you fly in and out, count about 24-26 days for the entire trip. If you walk in from the road head at Hille, add three more days in each direction. You can reach Hille via a long {24 hrs) bus ride from Kathmandu, or fly to Biratnagar then drive for a half day to this major hill bazaar. Tumlingtar's grass airstrip on a natural plateau bounded by the wide Arun River on the west and the Shbha Khola on the east. If the weather is clear, you can see Makalu and neighboring Chamlang (7317 m).
Your first night will be spent at Kongma (4200 m), and there is quite a distance to get water. Next day when you top the first ridge of the day, you will find the stunning views of Makalu, Chamlang, Baruntse, Peak G and even Kanchenjanga off to the east (by far the best panorama of the trek so far). On this day you go through the first major passes called Kekela (4229 m) and Tutula (4183 m), but they are separated but then gather under the one name. The trail then descends through rhododendron forests to a campsite at Mubbuk (3500 m).
